Bringing Home Gold, NRMCA Excellence in Safety Awards

Chicago, Ill., June 16, 2022 — The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association’s (NRMCA) has awarded 82 of our ready-mixed concrete plants – or 75 percent – across the country Excellence in Safety Awards from the Think First Safety Contest. And 80 of those plants earned the highest, gold-level awards, meaning an incident rate of zero!  Two plants received bronze-level awards. 

To determine winners, NRMCA’s Safety Task Group bases the winning facilities off of the latest OSHA/ Bureau of Labor Statistics Incident Rate available for the ready mixed concrete industry. Only those plants with an incident rate below the national average receive awards.

The awards were broken down into Gold, Silver and Bronze tiers based on performance:

Gold – Incident rate equal to zero
Silver – Incident rate greater than zero and equal to or less than 1.95
Bronze – Incident rate greater than 1.95 and less than 3.9

“So much evaluation for awarding the mega jobs focuses on safety, and these awards are a great validation of the numbers we need to provide in OSHA data,” said Brendan Daly, manager major construction projects for Holcim US.

The award highlights our ability to transfer our culture of safety from fixed plant locations to portable RMX plant locations that have actively changing conditions. “An example would be Golden Pass, where the truck routes change, the locations of work are ever changing as the work is built, and the safety requirements on site are an added layer of complexity to our day-to-day job.”

The 2022 Contest received 1,775 individual plant entries, which is the highest number of plants to enter the contest in a single year. It is an honor to once again be recognized by NRMCA for our safe practices.
